Let me tell you a story.
About two years ago (give or take) a couple of guys contacted me asking me to be in a documentary movie they were making about Internet Marketing.
They were cool enough guys and all, but I said no.
The reason I refused is because I just don’t want that much recognition. I don’t want to be rich and famous. Just rich. Besides, you can end up looking pretty stupid in a documentary that you don’t have editorial control over. And I do a good enough job of looking stupid on my own, thank you very much. Don’t need any help there.
…So I passed on the offer.
A few months go by and I discover that these guys have gotten just about everyone in the Internet Marketing Scene to be in the movie. …Queue the peer pressure.
So now they enlist my friends to put the pressure on me. They used all kinds of persuasive techniques ranging from, “Dude, you gotta be in this movie.”
…To, “Frank Kern – quit being a hermit and get in the damn movie.” ”
And finally, “What the hell is wrong with you?? Get in the damn movie already!!”
But still I held my ground. Peer pressure be damned!
Don’t wanna be in a movie. Not my thing. Too weirded out. Thanks anyway.
So time goes by and I get to be friends with the guys making the movie. They quit asking me about it and I sort of forget all about it.
They came to my birthday party and brought home made beer. Strong home made beer. Well played. Then I see one of them again at Andy Jenkins’ wedding. (I was the guy who performed the wedding ceremony, by the way. Awesome.) We shoot the shit about random stuff and a good time is had by all.
But no mention of the movie. It looked like I had gotten away scott free!
But Then They Used The Most Devastating
Persuasion Technique Known To Man!
About a week ago, I’m checking my email and I see this:
So I download the file to see what they send, and here’s what it was (you gotta press “play” to start it):
Damn These People!
Now I pretty much HAVE to do the movie. If I didn’t, I’d be a real asshole, you know?
I mean …who can say no after such an exhibit of total coolness? Not only have these guys been super-cool to me for the past two years or so, now they’ve taken the time to create this montage video above.
Never once nagging me or hassling me …just being super nice until I “cracked”. Now I’m happy to help them and I’m proud to be in their movie. In fact, I feel kinda like a tool for refusing in the first place.
The fact is, they got me. They “killed me with kindness”, so to speak.
And you wanna know something?
This Tactic Will Work In Any Situation!
Like …oh, I don’t know … maybe your business.
You should never underestimate the power of being totally cool to people and doing good things for others. I’m not talking about being manipulative and lame. I’m talking about just being a genuinely nice person who actually gives a damn.
Goes a long way.
Picture this:
You’ve got a guy who subscribes to your “Cat Juggling” list. He wants info on how to get started in the exciting career of Cat Juggling. (The prestige!) So you send him a few videos about Cat Jugging and he digs them.
He still doesn’t buy your stuff, but he’s stoked you gave him the free videos.
Then you send him a pdf outlining a great step-by-step blueprint for really making it big in the exciting world of cat juggling.
Once again, he’s stoked. Loves it. Thinks you’re awesome.
You keep this up for another six months. All the way up until Christmas.
The guy gets his Christmas bonus check and the first thing he does is run home to your site and buys your Super Deluxe Triple Diamond Level Cat Juggling Bootcamp-In-A-Box!
It’s the most expensive thing you sell, and here’s this guy who joined your list AGES ago …happily forking over full price for it.
Why?
Because you were consistently cool to him. You were actually nice. You actually helped the guy out. A LOT.
Here’s the deal:
People Remember This Kind Of Stuff
And when you’re cool to them …repeatedly …they will buy from you.
Think about it. Even if you’re the baddest of all marketing badasses, only around 10% (at most!) of the people who come into your funnel are going to buy from you right off the bat.
They might not have the money right now, it might not be the right time, they might not believe your claims of cat juggling heroics, whatever. We both know that the vast majority of people who come into your sales funnel do not buy right up front.
Them’s the facts.
But 90% of our efforts are often focused entirely on that tiny little segment of people who are going to buy immediately.
…And we ignore the overwhelming majority of people who have come to our site, demonstrated that they’re interested our stuff, and haven’t bought yet.
Pfui.
Do that and you’re leaving 90% of your money on the table.
Here’s What To Do Next
Make it a point to perform random acts of coolness both in your community …and by giving cool stuff away to your list.
Do this every week for the rest of the summer.
Just GIVE STUFF AWAY TO BE COOL.
For example, write a blog post every week or so outlining how to solve a problem your market is facing.
A few months back, I was doing a phone consult with a guy and he asked me how to find a product to sell. I figured that if he was having a problem finding something to sell, others probably were too …so I made this video blog post to help out: http://masscontrolsite.com/blog/?p=60
People dug it and bought stuff from me as a result. In fact, one guy bought List Control FIVE MONTHS later …and he told me that video was what made him want to learn from me when the time was right.
Hell, you don’t even have to make your own videos. Just find newsworthy information that will help your community and give it to them.
I did that very same thing a few months back and I got tons of extra sales from it. All I did was find a cool video showing how you can use Google now to get cheap ads for your site on TV …and then I put that video on my blog and told people about it.
I put a little link to List Control at the bottom and got something like $80,000.00 in sales as a result. And even the people who didn’t buy from that little link at the bottom will still remember that I helped them.
Your readers and subscribers are no different.
Oh – don’t want to make videos? Don’t have a blog? Try podcasting. Make a weekly podcast that has actual good information in it and you’ll reap the rewards.
In fact, the word “reap” is fitting.
All I’m really advising you to do is to constantly sow the seeds of coolness in your community and with your prospects and you will reap the rewards, guaranteed.
It’s really one of the oldest success formulas known to man.

I’ve seen so many stats on how a very small percentage of your visitors (or potential customers you meet in the offline world) will buy from you now – but almost all will buy your type of service in the next 2-3 years.
Yet we all persist in focusing on the “hot prospects”. Then when they don’t buy, we drop ‘em. We ignore ‘em. We let our relationship whither.
So 6 months, 18 months, 3 years downstream when we’re still on the lookout for so-called hot prospects, the guys we dropped are ready to buy – just not from us.

I’m 26 and so alone in this world it feels like. No money, No Product, just a bunch of talent and a learning disability, thanks to a bad education system growing up. My circumstances are bla numb & scary. I love SEO, haven’t invested much at all, can’t afford it. I do how ever make money only small bits, for my graphic design/art skills. I can’t say I know much about anything other then I want to do good in this world, make changes for good people around the world and help the environment. I want to change my life around 180. I live a life where I dream every day! I become anti social and end up in a room for days, trying to figure out some kind of plan. I have so many ideas, I see so much happening, but lack a backing or maybe I’m doomed. I have none, nothing and I messed up my credit. It’s a slow path back to the start line, with no success, living with my parents. It’s a struggle, oh well, failure doesn’t scare me! I’ve lived in a shelter, I’ve had to share rooms growing up, its been a nice yeah, I’m more humble but I want a complete change. Something that will bring light to this crazy life I try so hard to be content with. It hurts. If helping people through business struggles by teaching these amazing strategies for a pretty penny, can you, from the bottom of your heart Mr.Kern HOOK a Stranger up? It would put the truth right back into believing.

This is great Frank. Thanks so much. Just thought you should know that your second, opted in video is playing with a duplicate overlaid audio track that starts about a quarter of the way through so it’s hard to hear what you’re saying. I did manage to get the info from reading the directions under the video but it’s difficult.
Good luck with your new ventures (I was at the Magic Bullet conference.) If you have to burn your bridges, well, I guess you’ve got to keep on moving, huh?

Great post and you’re absolutely right.
I had the same attitude in the offline world when I had my bricks and mortar business.
Even after 15 years in that business I only ever remember advertising the business once when we opened.
Almost every bit of business that we did was on word of mouth marketing, and I guess it was also a few years back before the days on the internet and social media etc.
….
but it works online.
I guess the basics of marketing is still the same, regardless.
Unfortunately many people forget that each and every person who opts in is a real person ad not just a name and email “number”
When we remember that – we start building the relationship as you mention so elegantly in your videos in List Control.
I can just imagine the amount of actual money that is left on the table when people only gravitate around the instant buyers and treat the rest as tyre kickers as such.
Was gutted not being able to meet up.
One day maybe !

Only “smart marketers” who share FREE valuable info, I spend BIG BUCKS with them.
Unfortunately, there are few “smart marketers”, like yourself. Lots of them need a big “Frank Kern dose”.

I have a client with a line of customers out the door. I mean some even drive to Los Angeles from San Diego because they only want him to work on their Mercedes.
He does great work, but a lot of extras too. Like washing their car, doing small things at no charge like changing light bulbs, driving people to do their shopping while their car is repaired.
He has over 100 positive Google reviews all 5 stars and not one bad review. His site needs to be re-worked and I’m helping him with that, but I don’t know how he is going to handle the additional business.
The point is what you are saying works everywhere. I love your stuff! I look forward to joining your coaching program soon. Thanks again for the Great advise.
I tried the “don’t sell ‘em”, be cool approach for 8 months, it didn’t work…
…it’s cool to be cool, people by off friendly people. In my niche polarizing my prospects works – they WANT to buy or they stop listening.

I’m commenting even before finishing the whole article (which I intend to). The reason is that I thought I thought I was the only one who desires to be rich minus famous. I want to enjoy wealth, without all the attention especially from the media. Had Tiger Woods not been famous he would still be enjoying his wealth and doing what he loves most; playing golf. But you can’t be a great golf player (or great at any sport for that matter) and not attract attention. Which is why I love internet marketing. You can make your millions even billions and still attract little or no attention.

I listen to some of the video but not all of it because it was very broken up when people were talking so it was hard to know what some of them were saying. But I got the jest of it and it made me laugh when I thought, how can you not respond to your friends who gave you such a good report on your talents and abilities.
You are very fortunate to have the talent you have and the friends that you’ve made. I do not have your talent, although it would be nice, and I am just beginning to make some friends who are encouraging me in my blogging. This is also an area that is new to me because in January of this year I didn’t know what blogging really was.
It’s encouraging to see how good friends can have an effect on your life and that is what I see from your video.
To me, it sounds like common sense. If you treat people like crap, you get crap back.
If you can’t be nice and beneficial to people (whether personal or business), you’re not gonna get very far anywhere.

After List Control’s launch you sent out an e-mail saying you retired from IM. And on listcontrolsite.com it still says you’re retired.
But I’ve been getting e-mails from you regularly since then, and now you’re putting out a summer series (which I’m really digging so far, and really looking forward to by the way).
I was just curious about the thought behind that, because I was upset to hear you were retiring (since I really look forward to getting your stuff), and now I’m just a bit confused.

You really made me think. This so true. I will take it a step father and say that if you are the opposite and rude or mean to someone in the marketing community, that it can have a lasting effect the other way. It is really kinda a small world of the real hard core Internet Marketers. You see the same people every where over and over. So yes it is extremely important to have a good reputation and to treat people right. Sometimes you can’t get along with everyone but it is best to take the high road… I myself am still learning some of these life lessons that are really common since. I finally can work from home full time online and I love it, but if it was not for my friends and colleges in this field… there is no way I could have done it. Just from reading this you have inspired me to start giving away more free stuff to people that need it, and to expect nothing in return. You are the only “Guru” whose emails I open 100% of the time, and I’m always glad except if you send a 45 minute video that I don’t have time to watch.
I love your report and have just one simple request: Could you use page numbers in the future? It’s really easy. When your document is still in Word, you just pull down “insert” and then click on Page Numbers.
(I printed the report and then dropped it. So now I will have to work at it to get it back in the right order. That’s the reason for the request.)

No doubt you are a flippin genius. I love your work and just recently happened upon a video with you and Tony Robbins. The question you had for him about why people purchase programs in our business and don’t become successful (don’t take action) to make it happen. This intrigued me because it is something I have wrestled with for several years now, but…. I have your answer. I know this comment is down here at the bottom of your list and you may never see it, but if somehow you do and you ever want to connect and talk about it, that would be great. Believe me when I tell you, this could be huge for you….and ultimately for me too!
Maybe you should have an online course in being cool and package that so we could learn how to be cool. Throw in a little charisma as a bonus and we have a real sales proposition. I’m thinking 20-30 maybe 40 percent or higher conversion.
Now that would be cool ! Wouldn’t it ?

A lot of people will say that it is a matter of price that will determine your conversion rates, and to a very good extent this is true.
It is how you treat your prospects, even if it is, say, automated via a follow-up email series, and they may even KNOW that they are just recieving a string of pre-made emails they still will recognize your name, who you are and what you have done for them before they even make their order(s).
In this scenario said person makes their order, irregardless of the price tag, because you have already personally GIVEN them plenty enough to get started, to QUALIFY the prospect. You have helped them QUALIFY themselves with no side-angled marketing bs and treated them friend to friend and they know when they are truly appreciated.
If they are not … well, your competitors list of leads just got one name bigger … everytime you fail to treat your people like human beings.

I tried that a while ago. This is what happened to me.
I have a store online that is very good because I buy there every chance I get. I marked every thing down so It was cheap.
I then had given the address out to some waitresses that needed some where to save their money. But none of them would even look at the store on line. I wanted to HELP them any way I could. But For some reason none of them even look it up.

I was reviewing a cast study a couple of days ago about conversion rates with email lists.
He compared to email lists.
One guy had a list of 10k and another guy had a list of 4k. And he asked the question to us and said: “Which guy do you think converted better?” To my amazement the guy with the list of 4k out sold the guy with 10k people on his list.
And it was simply about what you stated here. Giving valuable information that can “help” them not just inform them. Build a relationship with them and instead of selling them you can recommend something to them.

It still amazes me to this day why sales people try to sell people stuff, instead of actually making real genuine friendships with their prospective customers, whether those customers buy or not. More often than than not, those customers that didn’t buy, eventually do anyway, because they appreciate your friendship, and know you will stay friends with them whether they buy or not.
